A vehicle manufacturer needed a way to verify torque tool position and fastener completion on a moving assembly line. The torque system had to stay aligned with each vehicle as it advanced down the line and give the operator clear confirmation.
GCI designed a smart torque Arm that physically indexes to the vehicle using the hanger on the moving line as a reference point. By interlocking with the hanger, the arm maintains its position relative to the vehicle while travelling on a 25-ft overhead runway. At this point Adaptics®, the smart arm software, can use the encoders on the torque arm to verify tool position for the rundown sequence.
An integrated light indicator provides simple feedback to let the operator know when tooltip position is correct and to confirm a successful torque rundown. This allows operators to stay focused on the vehicle without relying on a screen.
If the arm approaches the end of the runway, a limit switch safely disengages it from the moving line.
To enhance ergonomics, an upward bias activates when the remote start is triggered to reduce operator effort.
