The client needed a safe and ergonomic way to torque a 2000 Nm fastener located underneath the bumper of a mining truck with limited clearance and poor visibility.
GCI Engineered Solutions engineered a custom low-profile torque reaction arm capable of reaching beneath the truck while safely managing high reaction forces. To improve accuracy and visibility, the system includes a camera and monitor that allow the operator to precisely position the torque tool without working blindly under the vehicle. Once the tool is in position, the operator uses the remote start handle to initiate the torque cycle only after the system verifies that the reaction brakes are fully engaged. Also upon activation, the arm applies an upward bias to support the tool and maintain consistent contact with the fastener, eliminating the need for the operator to lift up on the arm during torque application.
The solution significantly improved operator ergonomics by reducing physical strain and awkward postures while increasing safety through controlled torque reaction and interlocked activation. The added visibility and tool support improved positioning consistency and operator confidence, resulting in a safer, more repeatable torquing process for a demanding under-vehicle application.
