The client required a safer, more ergonomic way to rotate long steel beams with varying profiles, such as I-beams and L-angles.
GCI developed a steel flipper manipulator designed specifically for this task, replacing manual rotation methods that relied on heavy physical effort and tools like pry bars. Unlike standard manipulators rated by payload, this system is rated by maximum torque, as it rotates the parts rather than lifting them. The arm floats during operation, similar to a torque arm, allowing operators to guide the rotation with minimal effort. To streamline versatility, the device includes quick-swap attachments that use a female adapter and T-handle pin for fast and secure changeover. The result is a simple yet highly effective solution that improves safety, reduces operator strain, and demonstrates potential for applications beyond its current use.
