The client needed an ergonomic solution to assist operators with a fastener torque process while assembling the cam housing for an engine.
GCI designed an advanced smart torque reaction tube with a twin-spindle tool mount to help the operator safely drive down the cam housing bolts. To properly align the tools, one tool is mounted on a fixed location to help index the position. The other tool’s location can be adjusted to accommodate various engine sizes.
The smart software, powered by AdaptiCS®, tracks the tooltip position by utilizing encoded drive wheels on the overhead bridge and crane system. Additionally, the software verifies the rundown for each bolt performed correctly. If an issue occurs, an alert prompt notifies the operator so the defect can be addressed.
To further enhance safety, a brakes engagement verification circuit (aka BEV circuit) ensures the rotations are all locked before the torque tool can be turned on. The remote start control engages the BEV circuit and then activates the tool with one button to keep the process simple for the operator.
