Industrial Manipulator with a Custom Tire Handler

The client was seeking to improve the safety and ergonomics of the tire ATV/UTV assembly process for operators.

GCI created an overhead-mounted manipulator arm with a custom end effector to handle different tire sizes. Once the part is gripped, the operator uses a video display and powered pitch to align the tire with the axle. A manual rotation on the end effector can fine-tune the alignment with the stud bolts.

During this process, a linear balance handle maintains the controls at a comfortable height for the operator. To prevent accidental release, a two-handed safety release system requires the operator to press both the “No Part” and “Safety” levers on opposite controls to disengage the tire.
