The client was looking for a solution to verify a pre-heating process to prep a steel mast for welding. The solution would also need to take into account ergonomics and safety for the operator.
GCI designed a smart manipulator arm with a custom mount to hold a flamethrower tool for the heating process. The smart arm utilizes AdaptiCS® to track the tooltip of the flamethrower and shows the progress as it moves through the desired pattern. The visual indicator in front of the operator confirms when the tool is in the correct position or the flamethrower will not ignite.
In regard to ergonomics and safety, the system includes the load balancing feature and a dead man’s switch. The load balancing feature zeros out the weight of the arm to make it easy to move the tool through the heating pattern. The dead man’s switch requires the operator to grip both handles or the tool will not activate.
